Question: Are children witnessing/experience domestic violence are likely to repeat the cycle of abuse in adulthood?
Hypothesis: Children that witness/experience domestic violence are more likely to repeat the cycle of abuse than who do not witness/experience. According to CDC there are a combination of elements for an individual to become at risk of intimate partner violence (IVP). Intimate partner can start as young as 10 and older. During these times kids are dating at a younger age and can end up in IPV situation. As children we tend to grow up in our social norms and learn from our experience and what we see. If someone at a young age witness violence repeatedly there is a higher rate to repeat those behavior as to a child that does not experience/witnessing. Twenty-one percent of high school girls have been physically or sexually assaulted by someone they dated…Ten percent of high school boys also report having been physically or sexually assaulted by a dating partner. (Szabo) (2015). These stats show that teen dating violence has become a bigger issue and lead to continue the pattern to adulthood. Kids early as 10 and 11 years old are starting relationship and could have experience or witness violence and lead to a IPV relationship. If intervention, or prevention are not talked about the effect of experience/witnessing domestic violence as children can follow through age into adulthood not being able to break the cycle. The goal of the present study was to know the possibilities effect of previous counseling/ therapy between experiencing childhood physical abuse from a family member and later acting as a perpetrator of physical violence after the age of 18. “It was hypothesized that past therapeutic experience would significantly mediate the relationship of experiencing physical abuse during childhood and conducting physical violence towards others in adulthood.” (Maxwell, K., Callahan, J., Ruggero, C., & Janis, B).
