I graduated in May 2008 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Theatre and Dance, Business Minor. I wanted to teach dance full time, become a dance historian, and pursue a Master of Arts in Dance Research moving on to teach at the collegiate level. Eventually I wanted to obtain my PhD in Dance Philosophy. In 2008, I had already been working for the YMCA for three years teaching dance part time. As I graduated I would be taking on teaching all daytime arts programming at our YMCA along with all the dance programming starting that fall. I worked in other areas of the YMCA as well and taught at a local dance studio.

In November of 2009 I was in the early stages of applying for my MA in Dance Research when the Arts & Humanities Coordinator position came open at our YMCA. I was asked to fill in for the Coordinator, and if I was interested in applying. I had always thought it would be a job I would enjoy and would be good experience to add to my resume, so I applied.

The job quickly became forty hours per week, but it would be almost five years before I was officially made full time. By the end of 2012 the budget had more than tripled and expenses for the department dropped by fourteen percent. It was also at that time that I began to take continuing education hours through National Dance Education Organization. During that time one of the classes I took was Dance Research, and I did not enjoy it! That killed any interest in pursuing a Master’s in Dance Research.
