Ava Alvetro Mr. Tricomi AP Government 17 March 2024 Importance of the 14th Amendment The 14th amendment of the United States’ Constitution, passed by the Senate on June 8, 1866, reads as follows: “No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States.” This brought about the idea that the United States government cannot make any laws or rules that infringe upon the rights and freedoms that are guaranteed to us by other amendments in the constitution. This amendment also helped to grant citizenship to former slaves as well as others.
