The movie, A River Runs Through It, follows the Maclean family. The setting is in rural Montana in the early 1900’s. Big Blackfoot River is a major setting in this movie. The story is told in first person by Norman Maclean. Throughout the movie there are ups and downs; but the river was always there.
The river is where Norman, Paul, and their father bonded. Norman is the older, more responsible brother. Paul is the younger brother who is less mature and irresponsible. Their father is a Presbyterian minister and is strict. The river was their own secluded and special place. It was a place where they could relax and take the edge off stress. Time seemed to stand still when they were fly fishing.
