Adolf Hitler was born on April 20, 1889 in Austria. Hitler was the fourth child born to Alois Hitler and Klara Polzl. Hitler and his family moved from Austria to Germany when he was three years old. When Hitler was young he and his father would disagree on many occasions. In 1900, following the death of his brother, Hitler became detached and introverted. Alois did not agree with Adolf’s love for art.

Even though Hitler was an Austrian citizen he was accepted into the German military. During the war, Hitler was received the Iron Cross First Class for his bravery. Hitler was shocked with Germany’s surrender in 1918. Hitler believed that the German army had been betrayed Marxists.
Hitler didn’t agree with Germany’s decision to accept responsibility for starting the war. Following the war, Hitler returned to Munich where he continued to serve in the military. Hitler adopted many anti-semitic and nationalist ideas while investigating the DAP. Hitler then joined the DAP in 1919. The DAP then changed it’s name to the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei. Soon after this Hitler designed a new symbol to go along with the new name. The symbol was a swastika in a white circle with a white background.
In 1921, Hitler became the new head of the NSDAP. Hitler then began to gain support for his speeches that spoke out against things like the Treaty of Versailles and the Jews. On November 8, 1923, Hitler, along with the SA, interrupted a public meeting of 3,000 people to proclaim the creation of a new government. Following a brief fight, the coup that Hitler had attempted, known as the “Beer Hall Putsch”, had failed. Hitler then spent a year in prison.
