Though they aired nearly 40 years apart, Modern Family and All in the Family share many structural and content related similarities. Both shows follow one central family. While Modern Family details the lives of 3 distinct extended families, the Pritchetts are arguably the focus as the Bunkers are All in the Family. Both of these families are white, fairly well off and not controversial in and of themselves. While both shows tackle tough issues, a central white family still allowed the network’s target audiences to relate to someone on screen. The content related similarities can best be described as what Kirsten Marthe Lentz refers to in her essay entitled “Quality versus Relevance: Feminism, Race, and the Politics of the Sign in 1970s Television”
