“Kristyn, Kelli-Ann, where did you go?” my grandma asked looking frantically around herself. “Oh, there you two are.” She found my six-year-old sister and my five-year-old self pressing our noses up against the window of Koolau Pets, Plants and Ponds in Windward mall. “Grandma, can we go inside? I want to look at all the animals in there.” I said jumping up and down and looking up at her hopefully. My grandma gave me a smile and said, “Okay” as she took our hands and we stepped into the store. All around me I saw the most animals I’d ever seen at once and I couldn’t wait to look around. There were puppies, kittens, rabbits, turtles, chameleons, parakeets, fish, guinea pigs, parrots, mice, rats, quails, chinchillas and more. As we passed each cage, each with a different type of animal, Kristyn and I would pick the one we liked the best and which animal would be us. My dad bought a pure white parakeet for our family from Koolau Pets and Kristyn decided on the name Star. Star was our first pet that wasn’t a fish so we weren’t experts on taking care of him. So to make up for it, we tried to read books about how to do that, the different body gestures parakeets did and what they meant, and we put it to practice. The whole learning process brought my family closer together because we now all had something in common to talk about and do. But sadly, a year and two months later, despite all the safety precautions we made for him, Star got sick because when he was out of his cage flying around, when he landed, he ate something off our carpet which he wasn’t supposed to. A couple days later, he was weak, didn’t eat or drink and he slept for most of the day. I wished I could’ve done something to help him but there was nothing I could do.
