DBQ: What were some of the challenges African Americans continued to endure after they were emancipated?

African Americans during the time after the civil war continued to face challenges even after their emancipation. The North and Southern sides of the Americas fought the Civil War over the issue of slavery. The South was a strong advocate for slavery as they relied on it for their economy. At the end of the Civil War, many amendments and reconstruction acts were passed to liberate blacks in the US and grant them rights. The 13th amendment abolished slavery, the 14th amendment gave all men regardless of race the right to vote, and the 15th amendment continued to protect black rights around voter suppression.

Sharecropping was one of the social challenges that African Americans faced after the Civil War because landowners took advantage of uneducated people who worked on their land and therefore kept them in debt. Sharecropping starts when a poor black or white person who does not have land is looking for work. Source A explains that a landowner will provide equipment, seed, fertilizer, and items on credit to the sharecropper in exchange for them to work on the land. This goes on until the time of the harvest when the owner will take an agreed-upon amount of the crops. However, when the time of harvest arrives, the landowner will falsely calculate that the debts of the cropper are higher than the value of the harvest, meaning they must return again next year. The major issue is highlighted in Source D when it says that sharecroppers were often uneducated and could not argue back against the false debts placed on them. This was a form of exploitation that kept people working on the same farms for a long time, and oftentimes caused them to give up a larger percentage of the crops each year. Another issue
