Many of us have grown up having pets all of our lives, whether it was a dog, cat, gerbil, horse, snake, or a lizard. These pets have become a part of our lives and consider them as one of the family members. To know that in America many animals are being used for testing is heart wrenching. There are an estimated 115 million animals that are used every year for commercial and scientific testing worldwide (“About Animal Testing”). They are going to argue that animal testing donates to countless life-saving treatments and cures, that there is no suitable substitute to testing on living, whole-body systems, that animals tend to make for better research subjects than human beings due to their life cycles that are shorter, and that animals must be used for testing of medicines in order to prevent potential toxicity in humans and to protect humans. These individuals don’t realize that there are other options out there for animal testing and that it is cruel and inhumane to be testing on animals and for the animals to suffer.
