Have you ever tried to convince your parents into signing you in the army at the age of 17? If you haven’t, let me tell you how I managed to start my army career at such a young age. So, there I was, a 16 year old kid getting ready to sign up for my junior year of high school. Great. All I could think about is two more years of wondering why the alphabet ever became a part of math. I was tired of sitting in class knowing that my career in the army could start in just one year. So, I made a deal with my parents. I asked them, If I graduate high school in three years will you sign me up for the army at the age of 17? My parents laughed and said sure. The day I met with my recruiter he managed to have me take The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery that same day. The next day I had my military occupational specialty picked out. I decided to enlist in the army as a Cannon Crewmember with an Airborne contract. I shipped off to Fort Sill where I attended and completed Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training. Shortly after that I was on my way to Fort Benning to complete Airborne School, where I was awarded “The Keeper of The Wings.” Upon completion of Airborne School, I was on the first bus out to Fort Bragg, the place I would be calling home for the next three years. I hit the ground running when I arrived at my unit. I won the Soldier of the Month Board as a Private First Class and I was one out of three Paratroopers in my battalion selected to be a part of the 70th Anniversary of D-Day and the Invasion of Normandy. I was the youngest Paratrooper in Normandy at the age of 18 and I was the first Paratrooper to exit the door that day.
