Very little is known about the footwear that was worn in prehistoric times; but we have discovered different types of shoes all across the spectrum of cultures. Examples of the shoes found by the archeologist would be leather shoes and foot wraps made of hides found all over the world giving us and idea on how prehistoric people protected their feet. The oldest pair of shoes ever discovered are estimated to be 10,000 years’ old and were found in Oregon. However, 25,000-year-old clothing that has been discovered suggest that shoes could have been around longer than what we have estimated. (The Gale Group, Inc., 2004)

The reason that running barefoot could be better is because most people who decide to go shoeless land on their toes first which causes less strain in the foot than landing on the heel like traditional people who run with shoes do. A group of scientist took the running styles of five different groups and compared them in terms of which style caused more painful impact. The groups are athletes from the United States who always wear running shoes; athletes from the Rift Valley Province in Kenya who grew up running barefoot, but now don modern running shoes; U.S. runners who used to wear shoes, but now go barefoot; and runners from Kenya who either always wear shoes or have never worn shoes. The researchers compared the data and found out that the barefoot runners avoided landing on the heel while wearing shoes to prevent pain so the landed on the toes to avoid impact. The studies also showed that the people who used to run in shoes had joint pains compared to the barefoot runners. Some of the damage running shoes can cause is knee, hip and ankle damage.
