Upon commencement of the Residential School I had some reservations about my ability to compete the required three days and was petrified by the thought of going through a five-minute assessment however it was a huge eye opener for me, and I have to admit that I felt not at all confident doing the roll play however, the process of reflection help me gained valuable training and insight into my own abilities and believes and I gained confidence. Active listening skills is an integral component of skills needed to become a successful social worker and can be improved through training and practicing (roll play). Through mindfulness and critical reflection exercises I have learned to identify the three main skill clusters, verbal and nonverbal that forms a critical part of any social workers ability to be successful in her job. I believed I had a beautiful posture of involvement by paying careful attention to them, slightly inclining my body and maintaining eye contact I have shown the group that I am and truly aware of their presence and a willing to listen to them. Eye contact and appropriate body languages are very important components to active listening, having a relaxed posture and facing the other person allowed me to keep an open body appearance. Placing myself the correct distance from the person and being aware that the environment must be free of noise and visual distractions took a conscious effort. Regarding my non - verbal skills I do have very “soft caring eyes” but my face also shows my stress levels very quickly. From my facial expression, they could see very clearly when I was uncomfortable during our group activities. To become a successful social worker the emphasis must be on maintaining a very neutral facial reaction (Harms L,2015). A skill which I presently
