Chloe Bradford English II Honors 3rd Period May 17, 2024 Title Your Honor, members of the jury, my name is Chloe Bradford, representing the defendant in this case. Today we are gathered to discuss the untrue and heinous allegations presented against Ms. Lizzie Borden. If you turn to anyone of acquaintance to Ms. Borden, it is apparent that she is an amiable, charitable woman. As reported in the Boston Herald, “They talked of her life, of her inclinations, her interest in church work, her modesty of manner, unswerving sincerity, gentle forbearance and aspirations to be and to do all that is best and right in life. [.] Lizzie Borden's life is full of good works, kindly offices in the church and in the society of her friends.” Why would a generous young woman who worked from the kindness of her heart such as herself commit such an act of horrible violence against her elderly parents? The first point I'd like to focus on is Ms. Borden's relationship with Mr. Andrew Borden. As stated by Emma Borden during her testimony, the defendant had given her father a ring to cherish. According to Emma, it was the only piece of jewelry he wore, and he had had it for 10 or so years. Clearly, this shows a close relationship between Ms. Lizzie and her father.
