The catapult was first invented in 400 BCE by the Greeks. It was mainly for the use of battling and had been integral for siege warfare since antiquity. Throughout the ancient time, catapult was one of the most effective weapons. The actual purpose of catapult was to hurl large stones, spears, or any other projectiles at the enemy. For an example, to destroy the enemy’s walls of castles. Back in the day, Greeks and Romans were the first ones that perfected the use of catapults. In fact, the term “catapult” was derived from the work “katapultos” in Greek.
The first catapult was named the Gastraphete and was invented in around 400 BCE in a Greek town called Syracus. The Gastraphete closely resembled a crossbow and worked very similar to crossbow.
