Periphery, the outer limits or edge of an area or object. Many people have gone to the periphery, some more so than others. Some could be long gone and others could be living today. One particular person in St. Catherine of Siena, but what did she do, and why is it important?

St. Catherine of Siena was born in 1347 and was the 23 child to Jacopo and Lapa Benincasa. Growing up, she was very religious and intelligent, as well as cheerful. At the age of 16 Catherine's sister passed and her parents wanted her to marry the new widower. In rebellion to this idea she cut off her hair, as to ruin her beauty. Finally, her father decreed that she be left alone, as a result she was given her own room for prayer and meditation. She did all of this travel because she, a strong believer in Christ, urged for the reform of the Church. She also requested for peace in the United States. At the young age of 21 she experienced what she called a "mystical marriage to Christ." With this she proclaimed that she had an invisible ring that tied her to Christ. This vision changed Catherine, immediately after she returned to society to help the poor and sick. These acts brought her more followers and fame. She cared about the reform of the church so dearly that she got into politics! Some even say she started a venture to the Holy Land. At one point in her life she claimed that she inherited the stigmata, however, it was only visible to her. Even though she had many followers she had some skeptics too. When claiming that the ring and stigmata were only visible to her it brought up many suspicions. Sure, she was close to Christ, and sure she kept going even when the times were tough, but how do her acts carry on into this
