As users of the internet increased and began using the internet more than a tool for communication and trading information. The Ministry of Public security took more interest on matter to control the internet. The Golden Shield Project, known as the Great Firewall of China, is a censorship and surveillance project that blocks unfavorable incoming data from foreign countries. The program uses techniques to scan blacklisted words like “Tiananmen”. It’s an infrastructure of made up regulations from surveillance to censorship to detain those who oppose the government. Journalist that post articles memorializing victims of the Tiananmen Square protests or upload mocking photographs of the Chinese president, even a blogger who criticizes the Communist Party can be detained for an undetermined amount of time. Journalists that write critically of China are routinely arrested and detained, even if their articles are published outside of the country. These journalists that are arrested were deemed to cause trouble for "picking quarrels and provoking trouble." The Dui Hua Foundation, a human rights advocacy group, raises awareness about human rights issue in China.
