Persistence, a word that means to keep trying, is the best way to describe censorship. Throughout history, censorship has been the center of control in nations and countries. Governments use censorship to prevent the general public from seeing or hearing anything that might hurt their image. Many governments like China, Russia, and even the United States censor things every year, with a growing number as time passes. Such efforts are primarily used to control the country's citizens to do what the government wants and are often part of nefarious activities. As communication is censored and watched by the state, things that are common in places like America tend to be scarce here. Censorship affects the daily lives of Chinese citizens as they are forced to tiptoe around and must focus on staying in line with what the state wants. This shows that censorship can be used as a weapon and is often a very effective and efficient way to keep people in line. Another article titled “The Cyber Gulag: How Russia Tracks, censors, and controls its citizens” says that Russia “often [draws] comparisons” with China in their efforts to censor their country as authorities use digital surveillance on a “vast scale,” to the point where it is comparable to China’s “millions of cameras” that can “recognize faces, body shapes, and how people walk” to identify them (Litvinova). Russia is another example where censorship is used for control and surveillance. Using the same methods as China, Russia watches its citizens and ensures they are in line with the laws.
