An Unwanted Child
“Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat.” (Mother Teresa) Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah was a depressing story because Adeline was treated unfairly and was an unwanted child.

First, Adeline was whipped by father. In example, “He ordered me to face down on my bed and he whipped me.” (Yen Mah pg. 104). Later in the story, Niang slapped Adeline because she went to Wu Chun Mei’s party. “My face was still smarting from Niangs slaps.” (Yen Mah pg. 105). I now understand that Adeline was treated unfairly in many ways. This is important because it is one of the main factors of being a depressing story.

Earlier in the story. “You’re in Tianjin and she enrolled you as a boarder at St. Joseph's where she herself went to school.”(Yen Mah pg 27). I now understand that Adeline was a very unwanted child. This is important because it is another main factor of how this is a depressing story.

Lastly, Niang doesn't let them have friends over and they can't go to friends houses. For example, “You are not to invite any of your friends home, or to visit them in their houses.” (Yen Mah pg. 25). Later on in her life this happened again. “I never asked them here. They know I'm not allowed to go to their houses after school so they decided to visit me instead.”(Yen Mah pg. 115). The main idea is that Adeline is held from playing with her friends and Adeline doesn't like it. This is important because it shows that Adeline is being isolated by Niang.
