Environment Environment is the external elements that affect the person (McEwen & Willis, 2014, p. 42). The environment includes internal and external forces that influence the person. Fawcett (as cited in Shelly & Miller, 2006, p. 64) described the environment as a person’s significant others and physical surroundings including the setting where nursing occurs. The modern worldview sees environment as physical matter we control by science and technology, which is exploited for human advantage (Shelly & Miller, 2006, p. 65). I view the environment from a Christian worldview. Cody, Weisel, Biernbaum & Lioy (1992) found a correlation of increased visits to emergency departments on days with higher levels of smog. As Christians we have a responsibility to protect the environment. The Christian Worldview shares some theology on protecting the environment with other worldviews, but there are also many beliefs that are not shared.
Health
Health is the capacity to be self-sufficient, to adapt to life stressors, realize one’s potential, and obtain unity of mind, body and soul (McEwen & Willis, 2014, p. 42). I agree with nursing theorists who recommend expanding this concept to include quality of life. Health is often viewed as a physical status, where quality of life is a more holistic view that incorporates psychological and social well-being in addition to the physical. I share the Christian worldview of health. Shelly and Miller (2006, p. 65) identifies the Christian Worldview of health as “God-centered community characterized by peace, prosperity, rest, safety, security, justice, happiness, health, welfare and wholeness”.
