On Monday, February 8 as I entered Leland elementary I noticed that one of the youth participants in the BUILD program were crying and talking to the coordinators at BUILD. At first, I assumed that the participant may have some behavioral issues that needed to be addressed, but as I beginning to assist in the assessment process I recognized the severe nature of the issue. That morning the youth participant, who is a young girl, was a victim of an attempted kidnapping.
Reaction:
At first, when I saw the youth participant crying I thought it was merely a behavioral concern due to the constant behavior issues that occur with the participant. After understanding and recognizing the severity of this situation my heart was filled with compassion for the participant and I immediately began trying to help comfort and assessed the situation. For example, by applying the social work skills of the importance of human relationships in this situation a participant can feel a sense of trust when opening up to a social worker about the situation.
Action:
Reflecting back on this situation one thing I know I would do different is not assume anything. For instance, when I assumed that she was cry because it may have been merely another behavioral issue. If faced with this situation again, I would listen first before assuming anything and then, I would take the proper steps towards assessing the issue in the best ethical manner. This would be the best way to response to this situation because it gives the social work the ability to gather much needed information in helping resolve this situation.
