I completed my field practicum at Tennessee School for the Blind on Thursday, March 16. I had the opportunity to observe four classroom settings and work on expanded core curriculum skills with two students. This was the first time that I had been exposed to a residential setting. My schedule began that morning in an elementary classroom of students with blindness and some with low vision, and the day ended with working with two students in the area of skills identified in the Expanded Core Curriculum. The students from the first classroom observation were actively involved in their morning activities. Each student tactually had to identify the day of the week as well as acknowledge who was present and who was not present in the classroom. The children were also able to follow a schedule using manipulative made from real objects. Next the class transition to the gym for physical education where they participated in warm-up exercises as well as activities that included learning about directionality, which I observed to be a critical skill for academic success and life skills. The cafeteria was set in in orderly fashion with some dishes already placed on the tables as well the organization of the tables as to provided enough room for the students to move about with ease. The students were very familiar with their surrounding. In comparison to a cafeteria within a public school, the lunchroom is usually very noisy and the students are constantly on the move in all direction. In the lunchroom at TSB there was not much chatter and little movement. After lunch, a clean up crew of students meticulously the tables and prepare for the next mealtime. These students truly exhibited superb vocational skills despite their visual disability. As the day began to wind down, the students retreated to the cottages for expanded core curriculum
