College athletes are doing a lot while playing their sports. The two biggest college sports are football and basketball, these are the most watched due to the tournament in basketball and the championship game in football. Just these events bring thousands to the stadiums which pay to see and millions watching on tv which also pay, in fact the NCAA signed a 10.8 billion dollar contract with CBS for broadcasting. (Patterson) Obviously the Schools and coaches should and already do make money but the players are the ones on the field putting on the show trying to compete to go to a pro level. 60% of NBA players are broke within 5 years of retirement (Patterson) . If college athletes were paid they could have some practice with having money and where and what to spend it on. When college athletes get drafted they can make upward of 10 million dollars guaranteed. This means even if they get hurt halfway through the season they will still make the guaranteed amount by doing virtually nothing.
