The classroom is cold and devoid of energy as the teacher drones about the complexity of integrals. The sunlight attempts to pierce thick unyielding windows, with increasing success as the end of class nears. Finally, the bell rings. I spring from my seat to rush into the warmth and head to color guard practice, leaving behind the rigidity of school rules.

To the world, color guard is the art of spinning various flags and weapons to visually enhance a work of music. To me, guard is the outlet I express myself through to break away from the restrictive rules of academia. There are only correct and incorrect answers in school. In guard, however, there is no right nor wrong; it is only me, the flag, and the music enveloping my senses.
