Two way communication is important for a number of reasons, one of these would be that they are being communicated effectively and they are being understood. Another reason would be as it promotes independence and builds confidence in the individual due to them being able to communicate in their preferred method. A third way in which it is important would be that it builds a positive relationship with all parties and allows the individual to express themselves and know they are understood and respected and allows care workers to understand more complex needs communicated. Lastly, it can assist with promoting socialisation and friendships with other individuals, which is positive in promoting the individual’s well-being.

1.2 – Two-way communication is important to individuals with sensory loss as it allows them to know that they are effectively communicating and being heard. It allows them to know that their opinions, values, wants and needs are being heard and they are being understood by these factors. I also within my job role need to ensure that if I am supporting those with sensory loss that I complete and apply the appropriate training to ensure I can effectively implement two-way communication with the individual and support them appropriately, I have completed Makaton training in the past to support a deaf individual with communication.
