John Steinbeck: John Ernst Steinbeck, Jr. lived from (1902-1968), born in Salinas, California, came from a family of moderate means. John Steinbeck was the third of four children and the only son born to John Ernst and Olive Hamilton Steinbeck. Steinbeck attended Stanford University intermittently between 1920-1926, however Steinbeck did not graduate from Stanford.
Steinbeck went to New York, where he tried for a few years to establish himself as a free-lance writer, but he failed and returned to California. Steinbeck returned to California to begin work as a writer of serious fiction.
