They had a hard time trying to decide between three official flags during the four year civil war. From all the flags being considered none of them
was chosen to be the battle flag. The very first flag was approved in
1861. The flag had seven stars on it and represented the seven breakaway states which were South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida,
Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. The seven white stars on the flag formed a circle. There was a problem with the three flags simply because they were not blowing the right way and wasn’t showing the stars on the flag. After a while they came to the conclusion to use the third flag as the National Flag of the confederacy effective in 1865. A symbol to maintain their southern culture and traditions had been agreed upon.
Controversy over the Flag
In 2015 the Charleston church shooting brought national attention to the confederate flag and what it represents. At the time the confederate flag flew at the state capital for both North Carolina and South Carolina. Dylan Roof who was convicted of the church shooting, was found to be a white Supremacist.
