In the article “A Rose for Charlie” of Us and Them, Charlie lived among a hypercritical world where being a homosexual was not accepted. The kids treated him so evil that he did not attend his high school graduation. He did not want his parents to see how badly he was treated. When someone is being bullied, constantly teased, and picked on for being gay all the time, it would cause anyone to have confidence issues. Not only was Charlie tortured at high school, his parents were not supportive of him being homosexual, he did not get along with his stepfather, so he decided to not live at home and be an embarrassment to his family. As long as Charlie stayed in Portsmouth, he would be a shame to his family (Carnes, 1999). It is not conceivable to have parents that do not accept and love their child unconditionally. When Charlie thought that hope was lost he found a church that had a support group for homosexuals. Charlie had finally found a community of friends at the Church that had a lot of openly gay members. (Carnes, 1999). It must have been an amazing feeling to find a place where he was accepted and could be himself so that he could express his feelings openly. He finally found a place that sheltered him from all the cruelties he tolerated. Eventually, Charlie was thrown over a bridge and died, all because someone hated people who are attracted to the same sex. To be tormented your whole life and be killed
