An estimated 3,000 people die due to distracted driving/cell phone use each year, according to the CDC. Those people thought they were innocently reading a text message, calling a friend, but little did they know that those 3-4 seconds their eyes were off the road would cost them their life. Distracted driving has been around ever since audio systems were introduced in the early 60’s, but death tolls and injuries spiked when cellular devices were introduced in the 2000’s. There have been countless amounts of laws put in place to reduce the number of accidents, but none have made a major impact. When you're driving intoxicated, your eyes are still somewhat focused on the road. When distracted by a phone, your eyes are completely off the road. This number is highly underestimated because many deaths due to phone use go under the radar due to it being harder to prove that you were using your phone while driving rather than being intoxicated. “Distracted driving is rarely as obvious, and proving someone was using a cellphone can be complicated, as drivers are reluctant to admit that they were using the cellphones before a crash.” Says Michael V. The number of deaths is already high, imagine how many more are caused by distracted driving that get swept under the rug due to the inability to prove if a cell phone was present at the time of the crash.If distracted driving is equally as dangerous as drunk driving, shouldn’t there be more serious consequences and more media talking about it?
