1. What is diversity? Why is diversity valued? -Diversity means there is a vast variety of different elements. It also can be defined as differences in race, gender, culture, background, etc. Diversity is valued because no one is created the same as another person. We all have different views, (dis)likes, heritages, and thoughts that each person can learn from one another.
2. What is ethnocentrism? In what ways can ethnocentrism be detrimental to a society? -Ethnocentrism can be defined as the belief that one’s ethnic group is superior then another. Ethnocentrism can be detrimental to a society because it also can be closely related to that of racism and prejudice. This act can be read by others as offensive and unfair, causing altercations and disagreements. An example of ethnocentrism would be gangs. Each gang feels they are superior than the next, disagreements arise, and essentially turns into gang violence in our communities.
3. Define emigration and immigration. -Emigration is the act of leaving one country to settle in another. Immigration is the act of coming into another country with intentions on staying in that country permanently. In each case, they involve moving from one country to another but immigrating is seen to be a more permanent move.
4. What are some of the ways groups of people are identified? -Some of the ways groups of people are identified are by gender, race, ethnics, religious belief, appearance, and these are just to name a few. When people are identified according to race, its based on their physical difference. In reference to ethnic groups, people are identified by the differences in their culture.
