Along with this group came an individual named John Smith who later became the company’s captain after their first captain died on the voyage. The attitude of many of the men was selfishness which is what caused half of the sailors to die from diseases or starvation that occurred while being onboard. This is shown by the president when he “…would never be admitted for engrossing to his private oatmeal, sack, aqua” (Smith 72-73). This shows how even though the leader of the group should make sure that his people were eating properly; he is just deciding to take all the delicious food for himself than sharing it with the other men on the voyage. Additionally the motives that these Colonists had for coming to the New World was money such as growing tobacco. As can be seen Captain John Smith’s group of men were selfish when it came to food and diseases. On the other hand William Bradford’s group would help each other by sharing food or helping those who were unhealthy and sick. However both of these English groups were attacked by the Indians either in Jamestown of Plymouth Plantations. If I were to live in time period where the Colonists explored the New World, I would choose to travel and live with William Bradford’s group. This is because I would want to be in an environment where everyone helps each other even in the worst situations. In addition I would not want to travel and live with a group that travels to a new place just for making business. As a whole I think traveling with William Bradford’s group of men allows you to be in a better environment than if you were to travel with Captain John Smith’s
