In 2014, the American healthcare system faced many challenges in providing quality, low-cost healthcare (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018). Part of the problem was not having a centralized electronic system of all patients’ records, including patients’ health records (EHR) and medical records (EMR). This lack of electronic access led to errors in cost for treatment and medication. Electronic health records (EHR) is not a new concept; however, the U.S government promoted its use to store and securely transfer patients’ health information among providers so patients can benefit from getting a continuum of care, without error. Because a patient’s electronic medical record (EMR) is used by multiple users, it can also be printed (JAMIA, 2011). It can facilitate communication within a medical facility, where the patient is being treated by more than one doctor. In general, a personal health record (PHR) is defined as a patient’s own “…private health information, which is maintained and managed in a secure and confidential environment for the patient” (Health.IT, 2013). On a basic level, it improves legibility, for there is no need to interpret handwritten prescriptions. It also offers quick access to laboratory results, which may facilitate the first dose administration of an antibiotic in the Emergency Department (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018). Patients who are unable to pay for expensive, live-saving drugs, the EHR can help pharmaceutical companies identify those who qualify for financial assistance (McGonigle & Mastrian , 2018).
