I was thoroughly disgusted while watching the movie. I was filled with a mixture of fury, confusion, outrage, and a want to see justice served. When it announced the jury was all white males, I immediately knew the result of the trial. It was deeply unsettling knowing that the people of an entire town, an entire section of the country would have no mercy for a child in life and no respect for him in death. It genuinely scared me to think that this country at some point had become so separate on accounts of race alone. I was moved by the words of the mother and relatives of Emmett, and had an intensely strong emotional reaction upon seeing his open casket. the whole film had me in a perpetual state of shock. Prior to watching the video, I hadn't even heard the name “Emmett Till.” the video as a whole was a new learning experience. I learnt the true extents to which some people will go to maintain separation in their towns, the depths of their hatred, the barriers they have, and the ignorance they have ingrained into them and their society. Emmett Till’s death had an incredible power to unify the community and push it to create a civil rights movement. To them, he was the final straw, they now knew that the hatred and injustice had no boundaries. For me, this raises the question: why wasn’t action taken before? The mistreatment they suffered for generations was accepted without batting an eyelash, despite all the cruelty shown toward blacks before his
