America is a country built on the basis of equality. The fight for equality has been a constant battle throughout American history, and is a central factor in the American lifestyle. Americans recognize that in the past, people have been disadvantaged, and are now trying to present equal opportunities to everyone. The battle for equality makes America better, as it forces people to think about others, creating empathy and a mutual understanding that we are all created equal. Equality is a factor that has a strong influence in the workplace. Companies want to have a diverse workplace that present equal opportunities to everyone. When it becomes evident that this is not happening, people become angry and offended. For example, at the major company Google, one man is feeling the repercussions after commenting on this. He noticed that far more men work in these high tech jobs than women. He wrote a memo claiming that men are better suited for these office jobs due to their ability to handle high pressure jobs. The wage gap between men and women of equal jobs is closing, but is still far too large. In 2011, the ratio of men to women median weekly yearly-earning was 82.2 percent, which was a record high (Hegewisch). Yet ideally, this ratio should be close to 100 percent. Yet due to sexism, women are payed less than their male counterparts. This can be for a variety of reasons, including taking advantage of women and offering them less money when offering a job based on the assumption that the women will not ask for more pay. Yet women should not be offered less pay just to benefit her superior who then gets to pay her less for doing the same amount of work as her counterparts.
