Immigration is a controversial topic encompassing the United States. Many people stand for stricter policies, and many also wish to change the policies to make them fairer and less harsh. I personally believe that current immigration policies need to be reformed for the greater good of America. The current system in place is flawed in so many ways, for many are being scrutinized and punished through heavy immigration policies. Immigration policies need to be reformed because immigration is misinformed amidst the general public, the current policies are unfair to those who came here against their will, and the current policies are also, in my opinion, going in the wrong direction. The Dream Act is based off the Supreme Court case of Plyler v. Doe, which granted general education to undocumented children immigrants. “Public schools, by law, must serve all children. The education of undocumented students is guaranteed by the Plyler vs. Doe Supreme Court decision, and certain procedures must be followed when registering immigrant children in school to avoid violation of their civil rights.”(irda.org) The civil rights of all children within the United States must be protected and educational equality must be achieved. The DREAM Act would allow these undocumented young adults to enter college institutions. (Cortes) Kalena Cortes is an associate researcher at the National Bureau of Economic Research and a Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labor. She wrote an article describing how the DREAM Act would help many undocumented immigrants. Within this article she displays the arguments that the DREAM act would support our economy and the undocumented immigrants. “So far, most studies on the effects of IRCA have provided thorough analyses of the law's effect on labor market outcomes among adult immigrants who benefited from the amnesty program. All these studies have found positive effects of IRCA on earnings.”(Cortes) The studies that were done and that were displayed in this article gave positive results from the potential DREAM Act. I feel this is the best act to promote educational equality.
