Before this surgery the patient had already received a fasciotomy, so we were able to see muscle, tendon, and fatty tissue on her calf. I had never seen anything like this before, so it was an amazing learning experience. I assisted the nurse with prepping the woman’s leg for surgery and then the surgeon completed the debridement session. After my OR clinical experience I definitely believe it takes a certain kind of nurse to work in this setting. My respect grew tremendously for the OR staff because I know personally that I would not be able to do their jobs. Standing for hours at a time would be very hard for me because I am one of those people always on the go at work. Also, as an RN in surgery you do not get to spend one on one time with your patient and that is something I love about the field of nursing. Due to these reasons I would not want to be an OR nurse in the future. Even though I cannot see myself working in surgery I would love to return to the OR if possible because it was such an amazing learning experience. After a day in surgery I was truly fascinated with the human body and just in awe.
