Wearing an ostomy bag was an interesting experience, to say the least. I ran into a lot more obstacles than I thought I would, and it made me really frustrated. Doing everyday tasks, especially self-care tasks, requires a lot more thought and consideration. For instance, while getting dressed I had to consider what would show the bag or cover it, and I also decided to pick clothes that I did not care much about, in case the bag leaked. I also had to plan better when going to bed because I was worried about leakage in my bed. I, again, purposefully put on clothes I did not care about. Before bed, I also wiped the skin on my stomach that had gotten dirty from the “stool” in the bag. Peeling it off was definitely a little painful. There was also a lot of redness and itchiness from the adhesive. I know from discussions in the lecture and lab that the ostomy bag can compromise the skin’s integrity, but I wasn’t expecting such a difference from only a day of wear. I can’t imagine the impact it will have on a patient’s skin long-term. I knew the ostomy bag simulation would be difficult, but I didn’t realize how stressful it would actually be.
