Mass shootings in the United States have become an unfortunate deadly trend that’s getting out of control. No one feels safe with all these unexpected mass shootings happening in schools, movie theaters, churches, and airports. For example, Adam Lanza shooting and killing twenty innocent children at the Sandy Hook Elementary School for no apparent reason, and then committing suicide. His motives were never known, but reports indicated that he had psychological problems. Guns are not the problem; unstable people with guns are the problem. The United States can prevent or reduce the number of mass shootings in this country in the following three ways: psychological background check, gun buyback program, and national instant criminal background check system (NICS).

The first way to prevent or reduce the number of mass shootings is by doing a psychological background check on potential gun owners. Certain individuals should not own a gun because of their mental illness and violent behavior. Civilians can sell their personal firearms to local police officers without being interrogated. The goal of this program is to decrease and destroy the number of firearms in many cities in the country to reduce violence and crime. For example, the Tampa Police Department collected 13 revolvers, 135 pistols, 104 rifles, and 79 shotguns that day, and the firearms were discarded in the Atlantic Ocean to create artificial coral reefs. Another example is the Boston Police Department with help from the community collected 1,000 firearms, and the residents received $200 gift cards in exchanged for their weapons.
