Remember the time when the Founding Fathers promised us the American Dream? The dreams that made us all excited about our new lives and new freedoms that we were going to inherit. The American Dream promised freedom for all people. Freedoms such as equal pay, equal rights, and equal opportunities. Well, not all these freedoms were expressed to women and other people who were considered “different” from the white male. Also, not everyone was given a chance to be successful or had equal opportunities. The Founding Fathers promised more power and freedoms, such as more participation in government decisions, so that people could feel like they were a part of all decisions. This once again shows that the American Dream was a lie and failure because not all people got the same opportunities. One last thing that the American Dream promised was that everyone was going to be able to be successful under these new rights and freedoms. In “George Washington’s” Farewell Address, he states, “This hope will be a full recompense for the solicitude for your welfare.” Welfare means “the health, happiness, and fortunes of a person or group.” Washington’s quote shows that he believes that everyone, under this new American Dream, will be able to prosper and make lots of money. He is implying that everyone has an equal opportunity to have all this success and be able to live the life that they want. However, in the poem, “A Supermarket In California” by “Allen Ginsberg”, he writes, “In my hungry fatigue, and shopping for images, I went into the neon fruit supermarket, dreaming of your enumerations.” This quote demonstrates that George Washington’s beliefs were wrong and not everyone was given the chance to have that great
