There have been many great leaders in history. Though his beginnings were humble, Temujin would grow to be the man that united the Mongol tribes and cut a bloody swath through Asia. In time, his people would grow to love him, his enemies would grow to fear him, and he would be called the Universal Ruler - Genghis Khan. Temujin was born in the year of 1162 and was named after a Tatar chieftain that his father captured. The child was born with a blood clot in his hand, a sign that he was destined to become a great leader in Mongol folklore. His life was not, however, easy. In this same year, his subjects gave him the title of Universal Ruler, which translates to Genghis Khan. His people justified his military success by claiming that he was the rightful master of the entire world. As the universal ruler, Genghis Khan worked to improve organization in the military and broke up old enemy tribes, leaving only those who are loyal to him. Now that he was the ruler over all the Mongol tribes, he enacted a new code of laws that put a focus on loyalty to his rule, binding together the nomadic tribes of Mongolia, and mercilessly punishing those who broke his laws. His laws included a strict belief in a single, omnipotent God, the practice of refusing to make peace with a people who have not submitted to Mongolia. In addition, he made it illegal to kidnap women, as it had caused feuds in the past between tribes and declared all children to be legitimate regardless of who the mother is.
