Almost all of the produce in our food market are GMO’s, otherwise known as genetically modified organisms. There is a hot debate about whether GMO foods should be banned or allowed to be produced and if so, should they be labeled. The GMO debate is such a big issue due to the fact that the vast majority of our food is either genetically modified or the ingredients inside the food are. Genetically modified foods should not be grown because they create the need for more herbicides and pesticides, cause environmental damage, and could possibly induce health defects. Genetically modified foods require more herbicides and pesticides to grow. GMO foods are infused with herbicide resistant traits. According to Robert Gould, M.D., and president of the board of Physicians for Social Responsibility, “The contention that GMOs pose no risks to human health can’t be supported by studies that have measured a time frame that is too short to determine the effects of exposure over a lifetime” (Consumer Reports Magazine). Contrary to this idea, genetically modified foods actually create negative health effects. The pesticides which are infused into GMO foods are still inside the plants when consumed. This is a danger to society and the next generation that will have an increase in birth defects.
