The levels of gun violence in the past few years have reached an alarmingly high level. This creates challenges to everyone's safety and well-being. The consequences of gun violence have reached far beyond just the immediate families of the victims. Communities can be left traumatized with long-lasting emotional effects. One key factor in the increase in guns is the easy accessibility to guns. Gun ownership is becoming more normalized and therefore, violence has increased as well. As of 2022, the United States has 121 firearms per 100 residents which makes it the only country to have more civilian-owned firearms than people. Furthermore, gun violence undermines the trust people should have in public institutions, such as places where mass shootings …show more content…
The knowledge of this alone could reduce the number of attempted acts of violence targeted at the schools in the first place. When an incident happens at school, it takes time for law enforcement to get to the location of the emergency, so having teachers already trained for these threats could potentially save lives in the time they are waiting for the law enforcement to get there. Being able to have this capability of a fast response at the educators fingertips could reduce the number of casualties. In conclusion, the idea of arming teachers in schools is not without its challenges and concerns, exploring the potential benefits of this is something that we definitely need to look into. The safety of our children should be our number one priority, and in the long run, if this can save lives, then this is something we need to think very strongly about. Arming teachers has the potential to reduce the risk of violence in educational settings.
