The theme, injustice, appears throughout the book “The Hate U Give” when the police killed Khalil. For example, in the Hate U Give it states “You okay, Starr—” Pow! One. I have a lot of fun. Khalil’s body jerked up. Blood splatters from his back. He holds on to the door to keep himself upright.” (Thomas, Page 15). This piece of evidence shows that the officer shot Khalil after checking up on Starr in the car. In addition, this shows injustice because officer 115 murdered Khalil even though he was unarmed and he didn’t threaten the officer. In addition, the book says “Officer One-Fifteen yells at me, pointing the same gun he killed my friend with.” This shows that One-fifteen points the gun at Starr. This is unfair for Starr because she didn’t threaten the officer and she was also unarmed like Khalil, but the officer still unnecessarily directs his gun at her. …show more content…
In “The Hate U Give” it says “You haven’t asked my child about that cop yet,” Momma says. “You keep asking her about Khalil, like he’s the reason he’s dead.” They kept asking Starr about Khalil, like if he ever sold drugs and what they were doing before he got killed. They were focusing more on Khalil and his actions rather than going into what Officer One-fifteen did and holding him accountable for what he did. Also in the book it states “We have taken into consideration the evidence as well as the statement given by the witness, and as of now we see no reason to arrest the officer.” (Thomas, Page 65). This shows that they have considered not arresting the police officer who killed Khalil.
