Human Trafficking is defined as using force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act. Millions of men, women, and children are trafficked worldwide. Many of these take place here in the United States. Human trafficking has many misconceptions. One being that you have to be transported to be trafficked. That is not true, human trafficking is often confused with human smuggling, which does require an illegal border crossing. However, you can be trafficked within your hometown or even your own home. Another misconception is that only women can be victims of trafficking. Although women make up the majority of trafficking victims, there are still some men that are trafficked. Americans started contracting the Chinese immigrants so they could pay their workers lower wages. Many people were concerned with this practice, saying that it was another form of slavery. According to The Exodus Road “The Page Act of 1875 sought to limit the immigration of Asians into the United States and prevent the traffic of unwilling persons and “immoral” women (prostitutes)” (Giovagnoni & Schooneveld, 2022). This act created fines for anyone who tried to bring people into the United States without consent, which stopped immigration of Chinese women. By the early 1880’s, nearly all of the Chinese population in the US were male, which sparked illegal trafficking of Chinese women by Chinese gangs. The trafficking of Chinese women in the United States continued into the 1900’s. Human trafficking is a big concern for me personally. Being a teenage female makes me a prime target for traffickers, especially with numbers currently at an all time high.
