One of the myths about human trafficking is that it only happens to women and runaways. The reality is this can happen to anyone of any race, age, religion or gender. The average age of a victim is 12-14 years old. Though 80% of victims are mostly females. Young males are also being sex trafficked. It’s just not as commonly reported. It’s more common to see young men being reported on the labor side of trafficking. Young people who runway from home are at a much higher risk for human sex trafficking and murder. It’s been reported that 1-3 teens on the streets will be lured into prostitution within 48 hours of leaving home. There is a 50% increase of being murdered if you are a runaway on the streets.

Pimps/traffickers are looking for people in chat rooms, Facebook, dating sites and the big one is Backpage. Pimps/traffickers are not always what we believed them to been, which was a stranger. It’s more common to see the pimps/traffickers as a boyfriend or girlfriend or even a family member. Straight “A” students and athletes get caught up in human trafficking as easily as anyone else they are on the same sites as every other
