Writing Assignment 2: Implicit Bias
Implicit bias means that we have biases that on normal day to day basis we don’t notice, the biases are in or unconscious and surface in our reactions and behaviors. Prior to the test on “race bias”, I believed I would definitely have a greater bias (preference as the test refers it) towards European American race although I try to be fair as possible in my interactions but I know my subconscious may have prejudices that I may not be aware of so I was pessimistic in my prediction. I didn’t believe I was going to be in one of the extremes of prejudice. Personally, I am a minority and as a mestiza, a mix of Spaniard and American Indian I knew that my own personal experiences where going to influence the results I got. The State of Science Review 2015: Implicit Bias, stated as one of the characteristics of implicit bias is that the bias may not be what we declare ourselves to believe or follow as social guidelines. To tell you the truth I think the results have a lot to do with my life experiences and where and how I was raised. Coming from a predominant Hispanic home where white was the predominant race, and growing up in upper middle class in Ecuador it was hard to ignore that the racism, prejudices and different social classes I was raised in. As a child I noticed how negative connotations where put towards people of a different race than mine, specially darker skinned people, including myself. Compared to my brother I was “tanner” and called as a form of endearment “negra” which by all means confused me as a child when that word to other family members brought such negative connotations. Looking backs it is sad to remember this as part of my childhood but that was my reality then, but when I moved to the US, specially
