In our practice of Careers Guidance and delivery of CIAG, in any situation, there are risks that can impact on our judgemnet and decision making. Implicit and/or unconscious bias can heavily influence our capability of being neutral in a person-centred interaction, even though we may not be aware of the pre-judgements we have. These biases we have can affect how we conduct ourselves towards someone in a positive or negative way. The fact is that they can be difficult to brush off, even if we have an awareness of these biases, they are ideas that are deeply rooted into our way of thinking and feeling. This problem in a person-centred environment can be critical as to how 'professional' we are as practitioners. Biases can come from stereotypes ingrained in our thinking from a young age and can originate from different aspects of life growing up. Ideals from family thoughts and values to stories we heard on the news depicting certain types of people in a positive or negative light can influence us. There are ways in which we can become aware of these biases. One of which is to take an 'Implicit Bias Test'. This can be taken online, however, although it makes us aware of unconscious biases, it does not offer any support on how to deal with the findings. Ultimately, it is up to the individual to formulate a strategy or coping mechanisms to combat the impact biases can have upon practice.
