From a parent’s point of view, I want to know that a well thought out, and concise educational plan has been developed for my special needs child. The IEP development, as well as, additional IEP team meetings allows for the special needs family to express their questions and concerns. As stated by IDEA, the IEP development provides opportunities for “the concerns of the parents for enhancing the education of their child”. Essentially, it is an assurance to the family of special needs students, that the school has not only conducted appropriate assessments to identify my child, but is taking this information, as well as, other documented material to construct a plan for my child. As a special education teacher, the Individual Education Program would provide me with accommodations and modifications for the special needs student, just as it does for the general education teacher. It also provides me with reassurance that all education professionals and service providers are aware of, and have written documentation, for the needs of the particular student.
