An informal reading inventory (IRI) is a test designed to provide the teacher with information on the students reading level. They are also helpful for a teacher to be able to see if the lesson she is teaching is being understood by the students. An IRI is also beneficial when diagnosing a student with a learning disability or delay. A reading inventory can be given in many ways, depending on the program you chose for our class. A traditional reading inventory is given by reading the story or passage and then doing several worksheets that are based on the story. A reading inventory will normally focus on word recognition and comprehension. An IRI, like Dibels, is administered to each student separately and has a script that is to be followed by the teacher. Another IRI that I have used is reading a-z program, this IRI is designed to be done either individually or as a group. The purpose of the individual program development is to tailor the content to the specific student. In the content of reading, the individual program development works very well with a reading inventory. As a teacher of students with special needs I am already contracted by law to follow the IEP of each student, an individual program development aligns with the IEP. I would chose the individual program development because it would allow me more time to teach and less time to collect data. I have read all the test for a more eloquent answer but I work with severe disabled students every day and the only reason I would chose it is due to the ability to not have more data, the individual program development aligns with the IEP to give the teacher more time to teach and less time for the countless standardized test, data collection, state test, federal test, etc..
