An interest group is, “Any formally organized association that seeks to influence public policy (Losco 173).” In other words, interest groups are a group of people who trying to create social change on a issue or several issues. People join interests groups for a variety of different reason because they are able to get discounts, or even get a higher wage. Though the main reason is because they want to be in a group who has similar issues and because they support the cause. There are different types of interest groups which include business, trade associations, nonprofit, professional associations, unions, government groups and other. This nonprofit organization focuses on the rights of undocumented workers and farmworkers. Professional associations lobby for issues that relate to their profession and set rules for the profession, regulate practices, and promote standards of conduct. An example is North Carolina Association of Educators whose mission is to voice for the people of North Carolina, and to advocate for education profession, public education and children. Unions is an association of workers who come together to protect their rights and interests. An example is labor unions like The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees they are organizations that advocates to protect their rights. Government groups is pretty much a group that represents the interests of other governments and an example can be foreign governments at times will hire lobbyists to advocate for their interests in Congress. Advocacy groups is when a group's aim is to influence decisions within political, economic, and social systems.
