Intervention programs are based off problem solving for a population addressing a social problem. In order to address the social problem correctly intervention programs usually conduct an evaluation of the program to determine the program’s efficiency. This essay will compromise of a program evaluation of the John Avery Boys & Girls Club of Durham, North Carolina. The program evaluation will provide insight into the program’s history, targeted population, programs, and recommendations.
In 1939, Mrs. Mamie Dowd Walker a Judge in the Juvenile Court System of Durham wanted to address the juvenile delinquency issue in the city of Durham, North Carolina. She requested Durham’s Committee on Negros affairs, to assist her with the juvenile delinquency problem. The program addresses the juvenile delinquency problem in the City of Durham, in addition, to intervention programs for at-risk youth in low-income families. The programs present day mission is to inspire and enable all youth of Durham, 6-18, particularly those at-risk to reach their potential of becoming productive, caring, and responsible citizens (“Mission,”2015). John Avery Boys and Girls Club program structure shares a similarity to social youth empowerment theory. The club welcomes you into a safe environment, requires participation and engagement, and responsibility sharing between program, employees and participants, which are three components of the social theory of youth empowerment (Hilfinger-Messias, Jennings, Mcloughlin, and Parra-Medina, 2008). The programs at John Avery Boys and Girls Club is open to children and adolescents ages 6-18 in the Durham community. However, majority of the organizations participants resides in low-income
